The Little Things

So as with all new places, it is the little things that make a difference be it culture, language, dress, etc.
So here are a few of the latest "little things" I have learned this week:

- How you go?
This is the equivalent to our "how are you?"
I still haven't fully picked up this one as I still answer, "I good, how are you?"

You say "tomahto" I say "tomaato"
- doona = down comforter/quilt
- quilt cover = duvet cover
- mince meat = ground meat (all I think of is that commercial where the little girl says "minced fish, you feed me minced fish, have you ever seen a minced fish"
- jam = jelly
- jelly = jello
- pokie = poker machine/slot machine
- chocolate bullets = think of a "good n'plenty" but instead of a candy shell, a milk or dark chocolate shell (yummy!)

Weather/Hair: so being on the water, you expect humidity however my hair is at a loss as to how it should behave. I have this "lovely" version of a "wave" and let's just say it ain't so pretty!

Welcome!
Woke up the other morning to my first visitor--a dead cockroach! Of course I screamed when realized what it was (laying upside down on the bathroom floor, me half awake going what is that?)
Was told that is a "welcome" to Australia. Apparently, though I have yet to see the best cockroach--a large sized flying one! When heard that, really didn't ask when those come out. I think I'll wait to be surprised by that one.

It's a small world:
So other than the Irish couple I mentioned in an earlier blog entry, I have a couple new friends.
- Stephen: an Trinidad born, American working for Coke who is moving back to ATL in a week. Ha!
Introduced through the relo company because he was selling household items. Of course, the pieces I had interest in were already gone but got a lot of good advice on his 1.5 years here. Must say poor guy though--supposed to be a 4 year stint but the office here went through a reorg and he's heading back to the States.

- The coffee man! At the base of my office building is a nice coffee/sandwich shop-BlueCafe. Got to talking with the manager one afternoon and he has been to Cleveland and Akron! Family friends worked for Goodyear so he has travelled to our lovely city. Had very kind words. Go C-Town!

I'm sure there will be plenty more "little things" as I venture more into the business and social scene. That's just a minor start! Enjoy!
